Entrance Requirements: High school diploma with a minimum of 50% in English 30-1 or 30-2 (30 or 33), Chemistry 30, or Biology 30 or any other 30 Level Science, Math 20 (Applied or Pure) or Math 20 or 23 Mature student status. Assessment may be required Registered as an EMT with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) BTLS/PHTLS issued within one year of course start date CPR - Level C issued within six months of course start date. Personal resume highlighting field experience. Minimum 18 years of age. Attendance at scheduled on-site orientation session. Signed Criminal Record Check Waiver form. The student may be required to submit a recent (within three months of the practicum start date), clear Criminal Record Check and/or a Child Welfare Prior Involvement Check to both the hospital and ambulance practicum sites. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain, at the student's expense, the necessary checks and have them available for submission to the host practicum site upon request. Failure to provide this check may result in the student being withdrawn from the program. Other Requirements: Class 4 driver's license. medical form, up-to-date immunization record, basic computer skills. Minimum Hardware Requirements: Pentium class platform with Windows 98 Power PC MacOS System 7, or any later version Modem (28,800 or 33,600 bit/min.) or direct connection to the Internet Software Requirements: MS Word 2002 for the Mac, or MS Word 2002 (or later version) for Windows Internet connection with Netscape version 8.0 or greater, Explorer 6.0 or greater, or Mozilla Firefox 1.5. Career Potential: A significant demand for Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedics throughout the province in rural, urban and industrial settings provides graduates with a broad range of career opportunities. Graduates are eligible to apply for admission to the following programs: Bachelor of Administration, Athabasca University Bachelor of Health Sciences, SAIT Bachelor of Applied Emergency Services Administration, Lakeland College. Please contact these institutions for information regarding other prerequisites which may be required for admission to the stated programs. Program Description: Many practicing Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are unable to leave their family, employment and/or community commitments in order to pursue a Paramedic diploma. The format of the Portage College Paramedic program offers EMTs a unique alternative to traditional full-time on-campus programs by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format so students can remain in their home communities for the majority of the training period. Students attend a total of ten on-site training weeks in addition to the three practicum rotations during the two years of training. Program Design: The program offers a paced schedule of study accessible to the experienced EMT via distance education. The program content and structure have been designed for multi- modal delivery combining: independent study, computer mediated learning, teleconferencing, on-site lab instruction, and practicum experience. Knowledge-based courses (theory application) are taught on-line, while competency-based courses (psychomotor skills application) are taught in a scheduled on-site lab setting. Clinical-based courses (practicum) are supported by the EMS industry and hospitals.
